What Does it Mean When a Dog is in Heat?
I’ve been asked the question of what the meaning of a dog in heat is. A dog in heat means that the dog is getting ready for breeding. A dog in estrus (in heat) is the time that their maturity signs are showed. A female dog will experience estrus a couple times a year. The question directed me to complete some the research to learn many things, Per Mr. Stuart says A female dog will experience estrus (heat) a couple of times a year. This is when she is fertile and becomes interested in breeding due to hormonal changes. She will have a spike in the hormone estrogen, which will then drop as her mature eggs drop into the uterus. The first sign of estrus in a female dog is swelling of the vaginal area and bleeding. The female dog will bleed from the vaginal area. There is nothing set on stone on how much she’ll bleed, some bleed lot and other hardly bleed. If you have a dark fury dog, you may not even realize it. Remember when your dog is in heat for the first time, this is a sign that she is sexully mature and capable of breeding. However if you are planning to breed her you shouldn’t breed her on her first time she experience heat. You like to control the breeding older than 18 months of age and it shouldn’t be younger because it can be very hard on the dog and can even stunt her growth as she still a growing puppy. A dog should NEVER be bred during her first heat, even accidentally. Measures should be taken to ensure that she is not bred, and these are measures that any responsible pet owner should be able to take. That being said, being in heat is actually just part of the estrus cycle that a female dog experiences most of her life. The roller coaster that is her hormone cycle will rise and fall just as they do in human females, just on a longer scale.

How can heartworm be transmitted to dogs?
Dogs get heartworm disease via a bite from an infected mosquito. The microfilariae, or baby worms, spread and mature within the dog. Heartworm disease is not contagious, meaning that a dog cannot catch the disease from being near an infected dog. Heartworm disease is only spread through the bite of a mosquito. Inside a dog, a heartworm’s lifespan is 5 to 7 years.

How can a Dog display submission?
A dog holding his/her tail down, ears back, corner of mouth back, groveling, movements with forepaws and body lowered is usually showing signs of submission. The more anxious or submissive the dog, the more tighly he/she will probably tuck his or her tail close to their body. And contrary to pupular belief, a wagging tail does not always mean your dog is happy and excited.

Stay
It is a command that is a bit confusing before your dog can master it. It is because some dogs dislike staying still, but do not worry, because they will know it with more practice.
Steps to teach them to “Stay”:
- Commence by saying “stay” and “down.”
- Tell them to stay with a calm voice while holding your hand with palm forward in front of your chest.
- If you’re using a “clicker method” press, it then gives them a treat.
- After it, use the word down then take a step back while ordering them to stay. Slowly raise a distance from them while maintaining a stay position.
- At first, if they do not understand the command, do not yell at them when they make a mistake.
Remember that you can go on to the next level once they learn the stay and down command. Teach them the sit command using the same approach.
Yelling at the dog will create fear and will prevent the dog from completing to the command.
Heel
Some trainers prefer to use the command “Let’s go”, “Forward” or “With me” when walking their dog. Whatever you decide to use, use the same word always when working together. Teach family members the same word, to keep it consistant. Everyone using the same word will help the dog and not confuse them.
To start, have your dog stand/sit on your left side and hold his leash. Have is favorite toy on your right side, “I prefer a sqeaky toy”. Place your right arm across the front of your body, so the toy is above and slightly in front of his head. Encrourage him to look up at the toy as you give the command heel with a confidence.
Your dog should step forward as soon as your right leg goes forward and he should be looking at the toy. The dog should be following the toy and if not, squeak it to get his attention back. Once you get his attention back, play with him using the toy for a couple of seconds and try walking again. Once his attention is back on you for a few seconds, give him the toy as a reward. This will help your dog to happily heel by your side on leash.

It is one single word that every dog should know.
How to teach them “No”:
- This command is perfectly demonstrated through the use of treats. Hold the pooch leash in front of them and put the treat on the table or floor. When you move the treat, you’ll notice that they will be provoked by it.The best way to teach them “No” command is by correcting them from getting the treat.
- By placing a treat on the floor, you are provoking them and they will come to investigate. At this time say the command “No” in a calm voice and cover the treat with your hand.
- When they start making an effort to get to the treat, this is the time you should be telling them “No”.
- When gently pulling the leash and they sit back, you should give them a treat and mark it with “Yes” while they sit back.
- This is an everyday command, so continue repeating this command every day and they will master it.
Down
The down command is complicated, because the command is more submissive. During this command you will like to be relaxed and positive. Always remember during the training you need to feel good, happy and relax to achieve success.
Steps to teach them to “Down”:
- Find a treat that looks and smells tasty, keep it inside your hand, and keep your hand close.
- Hang your closed hand near their nose and let them sniff it. Once they start sniffing guide your hand down toward the floor.
- Once you guide them by dropping your hand to the ground and they follow to the down position. Say the word “Down” and give them the treat inside your hand. After the treat tell them “good job” in a happy mood.
